Tension gripped parts of Lagos on Tuesday, July 14, evening following the killing of a senior chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaiya.
According to reports, the NURTW Organising Secretary was attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen along Ikorodu Road while returning from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
He was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, where medical experts confirmed he died from gunshot injuries.
Police Launch Manhunt
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the incident and commenced an intensive manhunt for the attackers.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, said security personnel have been deployed to strategic locations across the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“Investigation is ongoing to get the perpetrators. The Command has also deployed to strategic locations to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order,” Adebisi stated.
Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly called Sego, described the deceased as a loyal ally and trusted friend.
Fears of Reprisals Spread Online
Following the news of his death, viral messages circulated widely on WhatsApp and social media warning residents of possible reprisals by associates of the deceased.
The messages urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement around the Yaba, Fadeyi, and Mushin axis, citing reports of sporadic gunshots and tension in the areas.
While anxiety spread and some residents advised family members to return home early, the Police said they had no official report of shootings in Mushin as of press time.

Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and security-conscious while investigations continue. For now, residents and commuters in the affected areas are advised to:
- Limit late-night movement
- Stay updated with official police advisories
- Avoid large gatherings or areas where tension is reported
The killing of Toba Ijaiya adds to growing concerns about security around transport unions in Lagos, and the police say they are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
