The leadership battle within the National Union of Road Transport Workers took a fresh turn on Monday, with Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya insisting he is still the union’s National President despite a rival group seizing control of its Abuja secretariat.
Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, reacted via Instagram, describing the incident as a forceful takeover and stressing that the matter is still being handled legally.
His response came after Tajudeen Baruwa moved into the secretariat with his supporters, claiming court rulings had affirmed him as the rightful leader of the union.
But Akinsanya pushed back, saying he was never part of the case being cited. According to him, the judgment in question has already been challenged in court, with a stay of execution in place.
He also noted that he has not entered into any engagement with Baruwa or others involved, adding that the issue remains before the courts and under the watch of security agencies.
Reaffirming his position, Akinsanya maintained that he remains in charge of the union and urged members to stay calm and avoid actions that could worsen tensions.
Meanwhile, Baruwa has defended the takeover, saying it was carried out in line with rulings from the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which he claims validated his leadership. He added that his camp had waited close to two years before taking steps to enforce the decisions.
The situation has further inflamed tensions within the union, with reports of clashes between supporters on both sides, even as Baruwa insists the process was peaceful.
The NURTW has been locked in a prolonged power struggle, with both factions holding firm to their claims amid ongoing legal disputes and internal divisions.
