WARRI, DELTA STATE — The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has called for greater unity, respect and reconciliation among Nigerians, warning against the continued use of derogatory historical labels such as “slaves” when referring to neighbouring communities.
The monarch made the call in Warri, Delta State, while reflecting on the complex history and relationships between communities in the region.
According to the Olu of Warri, Nigerians must be willing to confront the difficult parts of their history while ensuring that past conflicts and social divisions do not continue to define relationships between neighbouring communities.
He stressed the need for people to stop using language that reinforces old divisions, particularly when such descriptions are used against communities with shared histories, cultural connections and geographical ties.
The monarch urged traditional rulers, community leaders and citizens to promote peace, mutual respect and cooperation, noting that the future should not be shaped by the divisions of the past.
He emphasised that while history should not be forgotten, it should serve as a lesson for future generations rather than become a tool for discrimination or continued hostility.
The Olu of Warri’s comments come amid broader conversations about Nigeria’s history, traditional institutions and the relationships between neighbouring ethnic and cultural communities.
He encouraged Nigerians to build stronger bonds across community lines and focus on shared interests that can promote development, peace and prosperity.
