The Peoples Democratic Party has begun fresh efforts to mend its internal divisions, with camps linked to Seyi Makinde and Nyesom Wike now engaging in reconciliation talks aimed at restoring unity before the 2027 general elections.
The move comes after months of deep-rooted tensions within the party, marked by legal battles, public clashes, and strategic power plays that raised doubts about its stability and electoral preparedness.
Speaking in Abuja, factional National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki said the peace process gained momentum following intervention by the party’s Board of Trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara.
According to him, the Board acted in line with guidance from the Court of Appeal in Ibadan by setting up a high-level committee to engage aggrieved members and open channels for dialogue.
Turaki explained that the National Working Committee aligned with the Makinde camp had already taken steps to reduce tensions, including postponing major meetings and toning down public rhetoric to encourage meaningful discussions.
While those initial gestures were not immediately matched by the opposing side, he confirmed that communication has now begun between both camps.
“As of now, leaders on both sides have started talking and are exploring practical ways to resolve their differences,” he said.
He also noted that the party is prepared to withdraw all ongoing court cases – across various levels of the judiciary – once a political settlement is reached.
Turaki reassured party members and aspirants that despite the crisis, the PDP remains committed to contesting all elective positions, urging stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt the fragile peace process.
“We’re ready to make compromises where necessary… the PDP is here to stay,” he added.
He further revealed that individuals believed to be undermining reconciliation efforts have been identified and sidelined, stressing the party’s role as a key opposition force in Nigeria’s democracy.
The leadership also passed a vote of confidence on Makinde and Bala Mohammed for their roles during the crisis, while appreciating party members for their continued loyalty.
With dialogue now underway, observers say the success of these peace moves could play a decisive role in shaping the party’s chances heading into the 2027 elections.
