Shock Move in Abuja: Foreign Affairs Minister Set to Quit Tinubu’s Cabinet for Bauchi Governorship Race.
Nigeria’s political scene could soon witness another major shake-up as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is reportedly preparing to step down from his position to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources close to the development say the Minister is expected to resign any moment now, in compliance with a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring all political appointees interested in contesting elective positions to vacate their offices on or before March 31, 2026.
The order was communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in a statement issued by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Dewan Goshit.
Tuggar’s anticipated departure comes shortly after the recent national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), after which attention has shifted to cabinet members believed to be positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral contests.
Supporters of the Minister from Bauchi who attended the convention hinted that his formal declaration for the governorship race could come very soon, pointing to growing support for his candidacy within the State.
Before joining the federal cabinet, Tuggar represented the Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011.
He later served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 during the administration of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Tuggar was subsequently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2023.
With the resignation deadline fast approaching, attention is now turning to other political appointees who may also step aside as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to intensify.
