The Sokoto State Government is cracking down on over-the-top pre-wedding celebrations. They say these expensive events are keeping young people from getting married.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s office put out a statement saying that all the money needed for wedding preparations is making it hard for young folks in the state to tie the knot.
He said that these crazy expensive pre-wedding parties are putting a ton of stress on couples and causing more people to stay single. He also thinks it’s pushing some young people to do bad things because they can’t afford a wedding.
The governor mentioned that they’ll be talking to people soon to go over the law and really start enforcing it. Even though the law is already there, some parents are still throwing these big, flashy wedding parties.
Aliyu believes the government needs to step in to help young people and make marriage easier and cheaper, as the Islamic religion teaches. He’s asking parents, religious leaders, and traditional leaders to back the new enforcement.
He brought this up while opening a revamped mosque and school in Sokoto. Religious leaders there are also praising his administration for helping Islamic places in the state.
