The South Korean government says it is ready to explore every possible measure to prevent a planned strike at Samsung Electronics, as labour tensions threaten to disrupt the country’s key semiconductor sector.
Officials disclosed on Sunday that emergency intervention remains an option after negotiations between Samsung and its labour union broke down over disagreements surrounding wages and employee bonuses.
The union, which represents a large portion of Samsung’s workforce, has warned of a lengthy walkout later this month if both sides fail to reach a new agreement. Fresh talks are expected to resume on Monday in an effort to avoid industrial action.
Government authorities fear a prolonged strike could hurt South Korea’s economy, given Samsung’s major role in global chip production and exports.
