Nigerian music sensation, Tems, has opened up about her journey to worldwide success, revealing how moments of doubt, rejection, and faith shaped the artiste she is today.
In a recent conversation with media personality, Angie Martinez, the singer reflected on her rise in the global music scene, describing the experience as both overwhelming and deeply meaningful. According to her, the rapid success has pushed her toward greater self-awareness and strengthened her spiritual connection with God.
“I’m definitely not perfect,” she admitted, adding that the entire journey feels like being on a huge adventure that continues to shape her life.
The Grammy-winning star first claimed the coveted award in 2023 for her role on the hit song Wait for U alongside Future and Drake. Two years later, she secured another Grammy, winning Best African Music Performance for Love Me JeJe from her album, Born in the Wild.
Her success keeps breaking records. Wait for U recently surpassed 10 million units sold in the United States, making Tems the first Nigerian female artist to reach that milestone.
Despite the accolades, Tems revealed that the road to fame was filled with personal battles. She spoke candidly about struggling with self-rejection long before the world began celebrating her music.
She explained that after spending years doubting herself, it was difficult to accept praise when recognition finally came. Those experiences, she said, forced her to confront her fears and better understand herself something she now encourages others to do as well.
Faith, she added, became her anchor during uncertain moments. Realising that some challenges were bigger than her led her to lean more deeply on God for strength and direction.
Today, the singer believes her mission goes beyond making music. She sees herself as someone meant to inspire others by living as “a light to the world.”
Tems first captured attention in 2019 with her breakout track Try Me before gaining global recognition through her feature on Essence with Wizkid. The song became an international smash and earned her a Grammy nomination, launching her into the global spotlight.
Since then, she has collaborated with several major names in the international music industry, cementing her reputation as one of Africa’s most influential voices on the world stage.
