The University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student, Tomisin, who was kidnapped while returning from a religious conference in Imo State.
The confirmation was made on Friday by the President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government (SUG), Mr. Temidayo Adeboye, in an official statement.
Reports indicate that Tomisin was among a group of eight individuals who were abducted while travelling back to Ibadan after attending the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.
The group also included Mr. Uwem Cosmos, the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship. Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the fellowship and is also the Vice President of its University of Ibadan chapter.
Adeboye clarified earlier social media claims suggesting that eight UI students were missing, stating that only one student from the institution – Tomisin – remains unaccounted for. He added that another UI student from the Department of Music, who also attended the conference, has safely returned.
According to the SUG President, concern grew after Tomisin failed to show up for her faculty examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. He disclosed that the student union has already begun engaging relevant security agencies and religious bodies in efforts to secure her release.
The University’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, also confirmed awareness of the incident, noting that the student did not formally notify the institution before travelling. She added that the abduction reportedly occurred on Saturday.
The incident has sparked anxiety within the university community, with students and members of the Scripture Union calling for prayers and urgent action from security agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as efforts to locate the abducted individuals continue.
