ABUJA, NIGERIA — A Customs uniform in the cockpit. That’s the new picture from the Nigeria Customs Service after Superintendent Nafisat Balogun earned her commercial multi-engine pilot licence in the United States.

Balogun didn’t start in the hangar. She started as a cabin attendant before joining NCS. In 2024, the Service named her its pioneer female pilot. Now she has cleared the next runway fully certified to fly commercial multi-engine aircraft.

Kuhi Mbaya, Managing Director of the Customs Technical Hangar Service, told the ceremony that Balogun’s rise is “both inspiring and transformative”.
“Her success is not just personal but symbolic, setting a new benchmark and opening doors for more women to pursue specialised careers without hesitation,” Mbaya said.
He told women across Nigeria to see this as proof that “barriers can be broken” if “dedication and consistency remain key to success”.
Mbaya also credited Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi for “championing inclusivity and supporting initiatives that create equal opportunities” in NCS.
Balogun Responds: “Thank You For Believing In Me”
Speaking at the event, Balogun thanked the Service “for believing in her potential and providing the support needed to reach this milestone”.
She pledged to continue serving with “professionalism, integrity, and dedication”.
