Security agencies in northeastern Nigeria have launched a coordinated search operation after suspected terrorists attacked a secondary school in Borno State, abducting several students who were reportedly sitting for the **National Examinations Council examinations.
The attack happened on Monday morning in Lassa, a community located in Askira/Uba Local Government Area, where armed men stormed the school premises and opened fire before forcefully taking away an unspecified number of students.
According to security officials, law enforcement officers quickly responded after receiving distress reports and engaged the attackers, preventing what authorities believe could have become a much larger abduction.
Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force command in the state, Nahum Daso, confirmed that tactical teams were immediately deployed into surrounding forest areas in search of the abducted victims.
He said security personnel had already begun combing nearby bush paths believed to have been used by the attackers during their escape.
Eyewitness accounts indicated the gunmen arrived riding motorcycles before invading the school during examination hours, causing panic among students, teachers and local traders operating near the premises.
Initial reports from residents suggested at least one teacher was killed during the attack, while another reportedly sustained gunshot injuries. Some women selling food within the school compound were also said to have been taken away by the assailants.
In a later security update, officials disclosed that joint rescue teams involving police officers, military personnel and local civilian volunteers had successfully rescued seven victims, while efforts continue to locate others still missing.
The latest incident has once again raised concerns over persistent insecurity affecting schools in Nigeria’s northeastern region, where communities have repeatedly faced attacks linked to insurgent groups operating across the area.
Authorities say search and rescue efforts remain ongoing as investigations continue.
