London’s Wireless Festival has been called off after British authorities refused entry to U.S. rapper Kanye West, derailing one of the summer’s biggest music events.
Organisers said the decision left them with no option but to cancel the three-day festival, which had been scheduled for July. Ticket holders will be refunded.
The controversy had been building for days. West’s inclusion as a headline act triggered criticism from politicians and advocacy groups, with concerns centred on his history of antisemitic remarks and recent public behaviour.
By Tuesday, the UK government moved to block his arrival, concluding that allowing him into the country would not serve the public interest. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had earlier made clear he did not support the booking.
The fallout also hit the festival’s commercial backing. Major brands, including Diageo, Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch InBev, withdrew their sponsorship, while PayPal distanced itself from future promotions linked to the event.
West, who now goes by Ye, had attempted to ease tensions earlier in the day, saying he was open to meeting members of the Jewish community in Britain. He said he wanted to demonstrate change and acknowledged the backlash surrounding his planned performance.
“I know words aren’t enough,” he said, adding that any shift in perception would depend on his actions.
Despite that outreach, criticism from officials continued. Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the situation as part of a broader pattern in the artist’s conduct.
Jewish organisations welcomed the government’s move, saying it sent a clear message at a time of rising concern over antisemitism.
The cancellation marks a major setback for organisers and fans alike, and means West will not be returning to a UK stage for the first time since his last major appearance more than a decade ago.
