A tragic road accident in Ibadan has left two people dead and three others injured after a multi-vehicle collision involving a tanker and several tricycles. The crash, which happened on Tuesday afternoon, caused panic along a busy stretch of road.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. along the Challenge–Gate axis at Bere, under the Oluyole Unit Command in Ibadan.
In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the agency disclosed that six vehicles were involved in the crash, including a DAF tanker and five tricycles.
A total of 11 people were caught up in the accident. Out of that number, three sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two victims (an adult male and female) lost their lives.
FRSC officials said rescue teams responded quickly, evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue at Adeoyo Hospital. The wreckage was also cleared to ease traffic congestion.
Preliminary findings point to excessive speeding as the cause of the crash, with the tanker driver reportedly losing control before crashing into the tricycles.
Reacting, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed warned against the dangers of reckless driving, describing speeding as a major contributor to road fatalities.
He stressed that no journey is worth risking lives and urged drivers, especially those operating heavy-duty and commercial vehicles, to strictly observe speed limits, particularly in busy urban areas.
He also called on fleet operators to improve driver training and enforce safety compliance, while advising tricycle operators and other vulnerable road users to stay alert and avoid dangerous driving habits.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads through continuous enforcement and public awareness efforts.
