A midnight collision involving multiple vehicles has thrown the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway into severe gridlock, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded on Friday morning.
The crash occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, along the Kara Bridge, inward Mowe/Ibafo, and involved a Toyota Sienna and several articulated trucks. Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the crash to speed violation and loss of control.
The incident caused significant damage and disrupted traffic movement along the busy expressway, with the resulting gridlock stretching towards Otedola Bridge and beyond. The congestion also affected the Isheri-Olowora axis and Ogunusi Road.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), FRSC, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the police, were deployed to the scene as recovery operations continued. Tow trucks were also being used to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the road.
In a bid to ease the situation, LASTMA said officials had temporarily opened one-way traffic from Berger down to OPIC Turning.
The FRSC has advised motorists to avoid the Kara Bridge area where possible as rescue and recovery operations continue.
