Shoprite, the retail giant, has officially shut down its operations in Nigeria, marking the end of an era for the country’s mall economy. The closure, which has been ongoing since 2024, has triggered massive job losses, affecting thousands of employees and suppliers.
The shutdown has also had a ripple effect on the country’s economy, with analysts estimating a loss of approximately ₦1.4 trillion from Nigeria’s ₦2.5 trillion mall economy. Many small businesses, including boutiques, eateries, and cinemas, have been severely impacted, with some forced to close down entirely.
According to reports, Shoprite’s exit is attributed to prolonged financial strain, inventory shortages, and the challenging macroeconomic environment in Nigeria. The company had been operating in the country since 2005, with over 25 outlets across 13 states.
The closure has left many wondering about the future of Nigeria’s retail sector and the impact on the country’s economy. As one former employee put it, “Many of us are still hoping, but hope does not feed families”.
