A UK-based Nigerian podiatrist, Dr Gerald Agbarakwe, has sounded the alarm on the shortage of diabetic foot care specialists in Nigeria, citing poor disease management and preventable complications.
With no dedicated schools or training programs for podiatry, the country relies on general physicians and surgeons to manage diabetic foot disease, often too late.
“Diabetic foot disease is a growing public health concern, causing preventable disability, hospital admissions, and limb loss,” Agbarakwe warns.
Research shows late presentation drives adverse outcomes, with diabetic foot ulcers accounting for 25% of diabetes-related hospital admissions.
Agbarakwe advocates for formal podiatry education, routine foot screening, and public awareness to prevent complications. “Early detection and coordinated care can prevent many ulcers and amputations,” he emphasises.
The specialist’s call to action highlights Nigeria’s urgent need to prioritise diabetic foot care and develop a skilled workforce to address this growing health issue.
