A new chapter has begun at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, as the Ondo State Government approved the appointment of Professor Tomola Marshal Obamuyi as the institution’s next Vice-Chancellor.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa gave the approval on Thursday, June 25, 2026, following the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council, while news of the appointment became public on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Professor Obamuyi will succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, whose five-year tenure is expected to come to an end in July 2026.
The appointment followed a competitive selection process conducted by the university’s Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, where Obamuyi reportedly emerged as the top candidate among 15 contenders for the position.
A distinguished scholar in Banking and Finance, Professor Obamuyi brings decades of academic, research and administrative experience to the office.
Before his appointment, he served as the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at Adekunle Ajasin University and also made history as the first substantive Dean of the School of Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
His academic achievements have earned him recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders. In 2015, he was honoured with the award of Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa by the Africa Education Leadership Awards in Mauritius.
Professor Obamuyi has also served on several accreditation and academic review panels, including assignments for the National Universities Commission and the National Council for Higher Education in Namibia. His scholarly work has taken him to conferences and engagements across countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Ghana, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, India and the United States.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, led the council that recommended his appointment in line with the provisions of the University’s enabling law and extant regulations.
Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in the new Vice-Chancellor’s ability to consolidate the gains already recorded by the institution and steer it to greater heights in teaching, research and community service.
The Governor also urged Professor Obamuyi to uphold the core values of the University while promoting peace, innovation and collaboration among staff, students and other stakeholders.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Ondo State Government to supporting Adekunle Ajasin University in maintaining its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned universities.
