Kano Politics Shaken As Deputy Governor Bows Out Under Pressure.

Aminu Gwarzo has officially resigned as Kano State’s deputy governor, drawing the curtain on a tenure that had come under intense political heat.

The announcement was made on Friday evening through his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu.

His exit comes on the heels of an impeachment move initiated earlier this month by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Lawmakers had levelled serious allegations against him, including gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial mismanagement.

At a plenary session on March 5, Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, presented the impeachment notice, accusing Gwarzo of diverting funds meant for local government councils during his time as commissioner for local government.

He claimed the former deputy governor knowingly approved the use of funds earmarked for local councils for purposes outside their intended use.

In recent weeks, the situation also took on a political dimension. Back in February, the assembly denied claims that the impeachment push was tied to Gwarzo’s alleged refusal to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This followed the earlier defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside members of his cabinet and state lawmakers, from the NNPP to the APC in January.

While Gwarzo’s resignation may help calm tensions in Kano’s political scene, there is still no word on who will step in as his replacement.
