Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed rumours that he may abandon the African Democratic Congress amid the party’s ongoing leadership dispute. Speaking on the issue, he made it clear that he has no plans to leave the party, insisting he remains fully committed despite the internal tensions.
In an interview with BBC’s Pidgin service, Atiku expressed confidence that the courts will eventually settle the leadership crisis in favour of former Senate President, David Mark.
According to him, the party is optimistic that the legal process will move quickly and bring clarity before its planned congress.
“We believe the trial court will resolve the matter as soon as possible, even before the congress. People may speculate, but we are confident the court will recognise David Mark’s leadership,” he said.
When asked whether the crisis could push him to join another political party, Atiku rejected the idea, arguing that the ADC already has a strong foundation and significant investment from its members.
He explained that the party represents a coalition built over the past year and a half, with structures and resources already in place. Because of that, he believes abandoning the platform now would make little sense.
Atiku also addressed questions about the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the next election cycle, noting that several influential political figures are part of the coalition, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
He described the group as a gathering of political leaders working together, suggesting that decisions about the party’s future candidate will be made collectively.
The comments come as the African Democratic Congress continues to grapple with internal disagreements while positioning itself for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
