After decades of mystery and fear, the man at the centre of the infamous Gilgo Beach murders has finally confessed in court, bringing a chilling case closer to its end.
Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Long Island, admitted on Wednesday to killing eight women in crimes that date back to the 1990s — a shocking revelation that closes one of America’s most haunting serial killer investigations.
Appearing before a judge in Riverhead, New York, Heuermann confessed to strangling his victims, most of whom were young women in their 20s.
Prosecutors say he also dismembered some of the bodies before disposing of them in remote areas, often wrapped in burlap.
He had originally been charged with seven murders committed between 1993 and 2010 and was due to stand trial later this year. However, during Wednesday’s court session, he went further — admitting to an eighth killing that had not been part of the initial charges.
Prosecutors say he is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole when he returns to court in June.
The case first gained national attention in 2010 and 2011, when multiple human remains were discovered along a desolate stretch of Gilgo Beach, about 30 miles from New York City, not far from Heuermann’s residence.
For years, investigators struggled to identify a suspect — until a major breakthrough came in 2023. Authorities were able to link Heuermann to the killings using DNA evidence, including samples recovered from a discarded pizza crust he allegedly threw away while under surveillance in Manhattan.
Following his guilty plea, his lawyer, Michael Brown, said the decision was made to spare both the victims’ families and his own from the emotional toll of a lengthy trial.
He added that Heuermann has also agreed to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s behavioural analysis unit.
“I think today brings some level of peace and closure to the families,” Brown said.
After years of unanswered questions, the confession marks a grim but significant turning point in a case that once baffled investigators and gripped the nation.
