The United States has quietly maintained a small but strategic military presence in Nigeria, deploying advanced surveillance drones and about 200 troops to assist in the fight against extremist groups in the country’s troubled northern region.
According to defence officials from both countries, the deployment centres on intelligence gathering and training support rather than direct combat operations.
The mission involves several MQ-9 Reaper drones alongside U.S. military personnel who are working with Nigerian forces to improve surveillance and operational coordination against insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.
Officials say the personnel and drones are currently stationed at a military facility at Bauchi Airfield, a relatively new airfield in northeastern Nigeria that has become a key hub for intelligence operations.
Despite the presence of armed drones, authorities stress that the mission is strictly non-combat. The aircrafts are reportedly being used for surveillance and intelligence collection rather than offensive strikes.
A senior defence official explained that the drones are focused on monitoring militant movements and providing actionable intelligence that can help Nigerian forces plan their own operations.
The deployment began in December 2025 after Nigerian authorities requested assistance from Washington as insurgent attacks intensified across parts of the country.
According to Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information (DDI) at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, the partnership has strengthened Nigeria’s ability to track militant activities and respond more effectively.
He noted that the cooperation also includes a joint intelligence fusion centre designed to deliver real-time information to commanders in the field.
U.S. officials say the initiative reflects a shared security concern between both nations, particularly as extremist groups linked to global jihadist networks expand their reach across West Africa.
The latest cooperation also comes after the United States scaled down operations in neighbouring Niger, where it previously operated a major drone base that housed nearly 1,000 troops before the military government in Niamey ordered American forces to leave in 2024.
Analysts say the smaller footprint in Nigeria allows Washington to remain engaged in regional counter-terrorism efforts while supporting Nigerian forces without directly participating in frontline combat.
Security experts warn that the collaboration comes at a critical time, as insurgent groups continue to stage attacks on military targets and communities across northern Nigeria, demonstrating that the long-running conflict is far from over.
For now, officials insist the mission’s focus remains clear: providing intelligence, training and technical support while Nigerian troops lead the fight on the ground.
