A judge-alone trial is underway in Toronto for a teenager accused of fatally shooting a young father in what prosecutors describe as a deliberate and calculated attack.
The accused, who cannot be identified under Canada’s youth protection laws, was 14 years old at the time of the incident. He has admitted to shooting 20-year-old Ajay Simpson but has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. The court will now decide whether the killing meets the legal threshold for first-degree murder or should instead be classified as second-degree murder.
According to court proceedings, the shooting occurred in Toronto and was described as an execution-style attack. Prosecutors argue the evidence shows planning and intent, factors required for a first-degree murder conviction under Canadian law. Defence lawyers, however, are expected to challenge whether the Crown can prove the killing was both planned and deliberate beyond reasonable doubt.
