Wizkid and Seun Kuti Trade Words Online Over Fela Kuti’s Legacy

A spat between fans has turned into a full-on public fight between Wizkid, a Grammy winner, and Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat activist. They’re going at it online, and it’s got Nigeria’s music scene buzzing.

It all kicked off when Seun Kuti kept responding to Wizkid fans claiming Wizkid was bigger than his late dad, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Seun didn’t agree. He said Fela’s impact as a revolutionary, cultural figure, and activist can’t just be measured by streams, awards, or chart positions.

Visibly annoyed in some videos, Seun said some fans were changing history and disrespecting Fela’s sacrifices during Nigeria’s military rule. He pointed out that his dad was beaten, jailed, and harassed for speaking out, and said you can’t compare activism and cultural resistance to making money.

Things blew up on January 20, 2026, when Wizkid finally responded. In a post that went viral, Wizkid dismissed Seun, saying he was bigger and mocking Seun’s constant mentions of Fela’s legacy. Screenshots of the post spread fast before Wizkid deleted it or limited comments.

Wizkid also shared a video of Fela’s daughter, Motunrayo, who seemed to be making fun of Seun for always bringing up their dad in online arguments. People saw this as Wizkid picking sides in the Kuti family drama, which only made things worse.

After Wizkid’s response, Seun Kuti posted more videos, calling Wizkid arrogant and ignorant of history. He claimed he wasn’t attacking Wizkid personally, but defending the truth about Fela’s role in African identity and Black consciousness around the world. Seun also called out celebrity culture, saying fame without responsibility shouldn’t be valued above sacrifice and struggle.

As the fight got more intense, fans on both sides dug up old videos to back up their claims. Wizkid’s fans shared clips of his international tours, award speeches, and career moments showing he’s one of Africa’s biggest music stars. Seun’s supporters responded with videos of Fela Kuti talking about oppression, corruption, and how music can create social change, arguing that his influence is still unmatched.

The online fight took over Nigerian social media, and opinions were split. Some people criticised Wizkid’s words as disrespectful to a cultural icon. Others argued that Seun started it by constantly bringing Wizkid into the conversation. A third group criticised both of them, saying the exchange showed the ugly side of fan wars and celebrity egos.

Despite the drama, Wizkid later suggested he was done with the fight and wouldn’t talk about it anymore. Seun Kuti said he’ll keep speaking out whenever Fela’s legacy is misrepresented.

For now, the fight is still going on. It’s one of the biggest celebrity showdowns of 2026, and it’s brought back old debates about legacy, respect, fame, and what really makes an impact in Nigerian music history.
