Gunmen Abduct 23 Children in Kogi, 15 Freed

A violent attack on an orphanage in Kogi State has left several children and a staff member abducted, in yet another incident highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.

Armed men reportedly invaded the facility under the cover of darkness, seizing the wife of the orphanage proprietor along with 23 children. The incident has sparked concern among residents and authorities, particularly due to the vulnerability of the victims involved.

Security Forces Rescue 15 Victims

In a swift response, security operatives launched a rescue mission that led to the successful recovery of 15 of the abducted individuals. While details of the operation remain limited, officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate and free the remaining victims still in captivity.

The identities and medical conditions of those rescued have not been fully disclosed, but sources indicate they are receiving attention and support following their ordeal.

Search Operations Continue

Authorities say coordinated security operations are currently underway across surrounding areas to track down the kidnappers. The attackers are believed to have fled into nearby forests, a tactic commonly used by criminal groups to evade capture.

Although no official statement detailing ransom demands or direct communication from the abductors has been made public, security agencies have assured residents that the situation is being handled with urgency.

Rising Concerns Over Safety

The incident adds to a series of abductions recorded in Kogi State and other parts of Nigeria in recent months. Communities have increasingly raised alarm over the frequency of such attacks, particularly those targeting schools and vulnerable groups.

Security analysts warn that criminal networks may be exploiting gaps in rural surveillance and response systems, making soft targets like orphanages and schools more susceptible.

Official Response

As of the time of reporting, there are no widely published direct quotes from senior government officials specifically addressing this incident. However, security agencies have consistently reiterated their commitment to ongoing rescue efforts and the protection of lives and property.

Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities by sharing credible information that could aid investigations.

While the rescue of 15 victims offers some relief, the fate of those still held captive remains a pressing concern. The incident underscores the urgent need for strengthened security measures, particularly for institutions caring for children.

Authorities continue to intensify operations, with hopes that the remaining victims will be safely returned and those responsible brought to justice.
