The Arewa Citizens Parliament, ACP, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of deepening divisions within the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on May 15, 2026, the group said many Nigerians are frustrated with what it described as “perpetual ambition” politics. According to ACP, coalition talks keep collapsing because they revolve around Atiku’s presidential ambition.
ACP National Leader, Hon. Saidu Jibrin, said Nigerians are exhausted by politics built around one person’s ambition without renewal or cohesion. He stated that every election cycle follows the same pattern where unity efforts start strong but end in distrust and fragmentation once Atiku enters the arrangement. The group added that this pattern contributed to divisions in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, before the 2023 elections and is already resurfacing ahead of 2027.
ACP went further to claim that Atiku has gradually transformed from an opposition figure into President Bola Tinubu’s most valuable indirect political ally. The group warned that this is weakening the opposition’s chances of presenting a credible alternative in 2027.
The statement comes as Atiku recently submitted his ADC nomination forms for the 2027 race. Other groups, including the Utomi Big Tent and Arewa Youth Council, have also urged him to step aside for younger, regionally inclusive candidates. ACP concluded that Nigerians now want leaders who can unite the country, build broad coalitions, and inspire trust across regions, rather than repeat old political cycles.
