A tragic building collapse in Abuja has claimed the lives of at least five people, while 10 others were rescued alive after a three-storey structure under construction caved in on Saturday morning in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market.
The collapse threw the busy neighbourhood into chaos as emergency workers raced against time, digging through heaps of rubble in search of more victims feared trapped beneath the debris.
Confirming the incident, Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to Nyesom Wike, disclosed that rescue efforts were still ongoing at the scene.
According to him, “At least five persons have been confirmed dead while 10 others were rescued alive after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, Abuja.”
He noted that emergency responders were facing difficult conditions as they continued searching the wreckage for possible survivors.
The Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who visited the site, revealed that the FCT Minister had directed that all victims receive immediate medical care free of charge.
Fasawe added that fire service officials, security personnel, health workers, emergency responders, and local volunteers had all been mobilised to intensify rescue operations.
As excavators cleared debris from the site, anxious residents gathered around the area amid fears that the number of casualties could still rise.
Authorities had yet to officially determine the cause of the collapse as of the time this report was filed. However, recurring building failures in parts of Abuja have continued to raise serious concerns over construction standards and regulatory enforcement in the capital.
