Security agencies have arrested eight suspected kidnappers and eliminated several armed criminals in Oyo State as authorities intensify efforts to combat abduction and violent crime in the region.
The latest update was provided by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said the arrests followed coordinated operations involving the military, police and other security outfits deployed to restore peace in affected communities.
According to Onanuga, the operation targeted criminal groups believed to be responsible for recent kidnappings and attacks in parts of the state. He disclosed that eight suspects had been taken into custody, while other members of the gang were killed during encounters with security personnel.
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Oyo, particularly in rural areas where residents have reported a rise in kidnappings and violent attacks in recent months. Security forces have increased surveillance and intensified patrols across vulnerable communities as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.
Officials said intelligence gathering and cooperation among different security agencies played a key role in the operation. Authorities have also continued to work with local security groups and community leaders to track down fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
Onanuga praised the efforts of security personnel involved in the operation and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
“The operation demonstrates the determination of security agencies to protect lives and property and to ensure that criminal elements are brought to justice,” he said.
The arrests add to recent security successes recorded in Oyo State. In late June, the Oyo State Police Command announced the rescue of abducted children and the arrest of suspected members of an interstate kidnapping syndicate during a joint operation involving the police, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters and vigilantes. Investigators said intelligence-led operations helped security teams trace the criminals to their hideout, leading to an exchange of gunfire and subsequent arrests.
Police authorities have maintained that investigations are continuing and that suspects currently in custody are assisting operatives with information that could lead to the arrest of additional members of the criminal network. The command also confirmed that those found culpable would be prosecuted after investigations are concluded.
The renewed security push follows heightened public anxiety over a series of kidnappings and attacks that have affected several communities in Oyo State. Residents have repeatedly called for stronger measures to curb criminal activities, particularly in areas bordering forests and remote settlements.
Government officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations aimed at restoring safety across the state.
