APC Leaders Forum Backs Governor Fubara, Urges National Assembly to Take Over Rivers State House of Assembly Functions

High-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), operating under the APC Leaders Forum, have formally declared their support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and called upon the National Assembly to immediately assume the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Citing a breakdown of constitutional order, the APC leaders staged a protest at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Friday, January 23, 2026. The forum urged federal lawmakers to invoke Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the National Assembly to take over the functions of a state legislature when it is unable to perform its duties.

The forum described the ongoing impeachment attempts against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu as a “reckless abuse of power” and a “politically motivated vendetta” intended to destabilise the state.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly has lost all credibility, legitimacy, and public trust,” stated Chief Eze Chukwuemeka, spokesperson for the APC Leaders Forum.

“This is no longer legislative oversight; it is a calculated attempt to undermine democratic governance. We cannot remain silent while the state drifts toward anarchy.”
Key highlights of the forum’s declaration include:
Constitutional Intervention: A formal request for the National Assembly to step in to restore legislative stability in Rivers State.

Support for the Judiciary: Commendation for the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, for his “bold stand” in declining to constitute an investigative panel, citing subsisting court orders.
Defence of Mandate: A reaffirmation that Governor Fubara has shown a commitment to the welfare of Rivers people and must be protected from “legislative anarchy.”

This move comes as the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt recently adjourned all anti-impeachment suits indefinitely and issued injunctions barring the Speaker and the Chief Judge from proceeding with the removal process for a period of seven days.
The APC Leaders Forum warned that failure to intervene could sacrifice the progress of Rivers State on the “altar of political desperation” and called on all Nigerians of goodwill to resist the ongoing “vendetta” against the current administration.
