APC Relaunches Membership Drive as PDP Claims 4.2M Members.
The ruling All Progressives Congress has officially resumed its nationwide membership registration, ramping up political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections. This comes as the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Tanimu Turaki and supported by Seyi Makinde, claims it has already registered about 4.26 million members.
Felix Morka, in a statement on Wednesday, confirmed the restart of the party’s electronic membership registration across all wards and designated locations nationwide.
“The All Progressives Congress announces the resumption of its e-membership registration. We call on current members to validate their membership and encourage new members to join the progressive family,” Morka said. He added that all registrants must be 18 years or older and possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
According to Morka, the digitised registration is aimed at improving the integrity of the party’s membership records, promoting internal democracy, and strengthening planning and management for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Ini Ememobong disclosed that data from the Turaki-led PDP portal shows that ward registration agents recorded 4,264,675 members as of midnight on March 31, 2026. Ememobong said the achievement came despite the tight timeframes set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling the process “herculean” but successful thanks to volunteers and extensive mobilisation across urban and rural areas.
He described the registrations as a sign that millions of Nigerians are committed to political choice, saying, “This digital membership drive shows clearly that politicians may be defecting, but the electorate is choosing the right path.”
The PDP data also highlighted demographic trends: young people aged 18–40 make up 40.3% of members, ages 41–60 account for 30.7%, and those 61 and above represent 28.9%. Male members slightly outnumber females, with 2,336,069 males to 1,928,606 females. Geographically, the South West leads with 953,954 members, followed by the South South with 917,652 and North Central with 757,502. Kaduna recorded the highest state-level registration with 408,915 members.
The PDP remains in a legal battle over party leadership, with the Supreme Court yet to rule on disputes arising from conflicting conventions. Meanwhile, INEC has extended the deadline for submission of electronic membership registers to May 10, 2026, to meet statutory requirements under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026.
With both major parties mobilising digitally and physically, the race to the 2027 elections is already heating up, setting the stage for a fiercely contested political season in Nigeria.
