A former Head of Operations at First Bank, Mr Akin, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for orchestrating a daring robbery at his former branch. Akin, who felt his salary couldn’t support his desired lifestyle, teamed up with armed robbers, providing them with crucial information about the bank’s security and vault.
The heist, which netted huge amounts of naira and foreign currencies, was carried out with precision, with one robber hiding in the ceiling and others entering through a secret exit door. Akin’s involvement was uncovered after police investigations led to his home, where large sums of cash, including ₦100 million and $50,000, were found.
Akin’s betrayal of trust has shocked colleagues and friends, with one former coworker describing him as “always professional and friendly.” The court heard that Akin’s actions had caused significant financial losses for the bank and undermined customer confidence.
During the trial, Akin expressed remorse, saying he was “deeply sorry” for his actions. However, the judge noted that his greed and desire for a luxurious lifestyle had led him to orchestrate a complex and brazen heist.
