From Grief to the pitch: Iran’s Powerful Tribute Before Nigeria Clash
There was a heavy, emotional moment before kickoff as Iran’s national team honoured schoolgirls killed in a recent airstrike, just ahead of their friendly match against Nigeria national football team on Friday.
As they stepped onto the pitch, the Iranian players carried school bags — a quiet but powerful symbol of the young lives lost.
The match took place at the Mardan Titanic Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey, but the focus briefly shifted from football to remembrance. The tribute was for more than 165 schoolgirls reportedly killed when a missile hit a primary school in Hormozgan province on February 28, at the onset of a growing conflict involving Iran, United States, and Israel.
Authorities in Tehran said the strike devastated the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, leaving over 175 people dead, including pupils and teachers. Iran has accused the U.S. and Israel of carrying out the attack, though investigations are still ongoing.
Since then, the situation has spiralled into a wider conflict, with over 2,000 lives reportedly lost. The crisis has also forced Iran to pull out of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
When the match eventually kicked off, football resumed its place. The Super Eagles edged the contest 2-1, with goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams sealing the win.
Nigeria will next face Jordan on Tuesday, while Iran is scheduled to take on Costa Rica.
