At least four police officers were killed in a brutal early-morning assault on Nghanzai Divisional Police Headquarters by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, confirmed that the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. on April 4, 2026, correcting earlier reports that placed the assault the previous night.
“Security sources said the attackers stormed the formation in large numbers, engaging officers in a prolonged gun battle before overpowering them,” Makama said.
The confirmed casualties include Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of Nghanzai Division; Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafia on special duty; and Police Constables Bitrus Luka and Shaibu Bukar, both attached to the Maiduguri crack squad.
The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by insurgents to security personnel in Borno State, raising urgent questions about the protection of police formations in the region.
Meanwhile, fresh terror struck Kwapul community, Chibok L.G.A. in a late-night raid over the weekend. Residents reported that suspected insurgents set a church and several homes ablaze in what appeared to be a coordinated assault on the predominantly Christian settlement.
Although no deaths were recorded, the attack left families displaced and traumatised, prompting urgent calls for increased security. Locals said the attackers operated for hours with little to no resistance, underlining the vulnerability of rural communities despite years of counterinsurgency operations.
The assault came at a particularly sensitive time – during the Easter period – underscoring the repeated targeting of Christian communities in Nigeria’s conflict-prone northeast.
