Celine Dion Returns to Stage After Six Years
The Canadian superstar received a huge welcome from fans as she made her emotional comeback despite her ongoing battle with stiff-person syndrome.
NANTERRE, FRANCE: International music superstar Celine Dion has made an emotional return to the stage after more than six years away from full live performances, breaking down in tears as thousands of fans welcomed her back in Paris.
The 58-year-old Canadian singer performed at the Plénitude Arena in Nanterre, near Paris, on Saturday, September 12, marking her first full concert since 2020.
Dion’s return comes after years of health challenges following her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms and significantly affected her ability to perform.
The singer became visibly emotional during the opening moments of the concert and struggled to hold back tears as the significance of her return appeared to overwhelm her.
She told the audience that the road back to the stage had been difficult but expressed gratitude for their continued love and support.
“I promised I wouldn’t cry, but they’re tears of joy,” Dion told the crowd, according to Reuters.
The singer opened the concert with her French-language song “On Ne Change Pas”, before going on to perform several of her biggest hits.
Among the highlights were “All By Myself” and her iconic “My Heart Will Go On,” the signature song from the blockbuster film Titanic.
The two-hour-plus performance featured about 25 songs and was met with an enthusiastic response from the packed audience.
Dion’s illness forced her to step away from touring and public performances. She publicly revealed her diagnosis in 2022 and subsequently cancelled planned shows as she focused on managing her condition.
Her most notable public performance since then came at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she performed from the Eiffel Tower.
However, Saturday’s concert represented a much bigger milestone because it was her first full-length live show in more than six years.
The comeback has also generated enormous excitement among her international fan base, with fans gathering around Paris and outside her hotel in the days leading up to the performance.
Dion is scheduled to perform a series of concerts in Paris as part of her comeback residency, with additional performances planned into 2027.
For a singer whose career has been defined by powerful vocals, spectacular performances and an extraordinary connection with her audience, the emotional Paris concert marked more than just a return to music.
It was a celebration of resilience, determination and the bond between an artist and the millions of fans who waited patiently for her return.
