
A security operation in Kebbi State turned tragic after gunmen launched a surprise attack, killing a police officer and nine soldiers. The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety in the area.
The ambush took place in the Giro Masa community, within the Shanga Local Government Area, as security operatives moved in on suspected criminals based on intelligence reports.
According to sources, the team had acted on information from residents who reported the presence of gunmen at a construction company yard. However, as the operatives advanced toward the location, they were ambushed by heavily armed attackers.

In the gun battle that followed, one police officer and nine soldiers were reportedly killed, while two military trucks were set ablaze by the assailants.
Those injured in the attack were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, for urgent medical care.
Reacting to the incident, Nasir Idris described the attack as deeply tragic and assured that the state government would support both the injured and the families of those who lost their lives.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to security, noting that authorities have directed hospital management to provide the best possible care for survivors.
The Governor also promised that the families of the fallen personnel would not be left without support, acknowledging the incident as a painful loss.
The attack has further heightened tension in the area, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and prevent future attacks.
