Messi Reveals Heartbreaking Reason Behind Emotional World Cup Tears

Lionel Messi has finally opened up about the emotional moment that left millions of football fans stunned after Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria, revealing that the tears he shed after scoring had nothing to do with the game itself.

The Argentina captain delivered a sensational performance on Wednesday, netting a hat-trick to lead the defending champions to a convincing win over Algeria in their opening Group J match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

But while his three goals stole the headlines, it was the sight of the Inter Miami star breaking down in tears moments after scoring the opener that became the night’s most unforgettable image.

Speaking after the match, the 38-year-old explained that the emotional outburst was triggered by personal struggles he had recently faced.

“I cried after the first goal, yes… but it was something completely unrelated to football.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength,” Messi was quoted as saying by Metro Sports.

Messi struck in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes to register the first World Cup hat-trick of his illustrious career, drawing level with Miroslav Klose on 16 career World Cup goals.

The opener also marked his 14th World Cup goal overall and came during his landmark 200th appearance for Argentina, as well as his sixth FIFA World Cup tournament.

At nearly 39 years old, Messi also became the oldest player ever to score both a World Cup hat-trick and a brace in the tournament’s history.

Argentina controlled much of the contest despite Algeria enjoying spells of possession, with Messi’s ruthless finishing proving the difference.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside, as one additional strike by Argentina and another by Algeria failed to stand.

The victory gives the reigning world champions the perfect start to their Group J campaign.
