Dele Momodu Says Spending Millions on Overseas Vacations Is Unnecessary

Veteran journalist and publisher Dele Momodu has criticised the trend of wealthy Nigerians spending large sums on overseas vacations, saying such expenses are needless and that local leisure and investment opportunities should be prioritised.
Momodu made the remarks during a conversation with entertainment industry figure Israel DMW, where both men agreed that Nigeria offers plenty of comfort and appealing places to spend money meaningfully.
Describing the current pattern of foreign vacations as excessive, Momodu highlighted the high cost of international travel, noting that airfares alone can range between ₦5 million and ₦10 million. He questioned why wealthy individuals would choose to spend such amounts abroad when the same resources could support local tourism or community projects at home.
“I’m tired of travelling,” Momodu said, adding that the money spent on extravagant trips could have a greater impact if invested within Nigerian communities. Israel DMW echoed this sentiment, saying that staying in Nigeria for leisure makes financial and cultural sense.
The discussion has ignited reactions online, with many agreeing that promoting domestic tourism and local reinvestment helps build Nigeria’s economy and showcase local attractions.
