DHS Mourns Staff As Olaolukitan Charged In Georgia Killings

ATLANTA — Authorities in the United States are reeling after a Nigerian man was accused of carrying out a series of violent attacks that left two people dead, including a staff member of the Department of Homeland Security.

The tragic incident has drawn strong reactions from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which described the killings as an act of “pure evil.” The case involves DHS staff killed Georgia resident Lauren Bullis.

Suspect Accused Of Multiple Attacks In Hours

The suspect, identified as Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, is accused of launching multiple attacks across DeKalb County, Georgia, an area that covers parts of the greater Atlanta region.

Investigators allege Abel is linked to three violent incidents within a few hours. Police say the violence began around 12:52 a.m. outside a Checkers outlet on Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur. The female victim from that incident was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries.

About an hour after that shooting, Abel allegedly arrived at Cherokee Plaza on Peachtree Road in Atlanta and opened fire on a man outside a Kroger grocery store in Brookhaven, Georgia. The man, believed to be 49 years old, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

DHS Staff Member Killed Walking Dog

One of the victims was Lauren Bullis, a 40-year-old employee of the Department of Homeland Security. According to officials, she was attacked while walking her dog in her neighbourhood.

Authorities say Abel allegedly shot and stabbed Bullis during the early morning assault. Bullis was found dead around 6:50 a.m. on Monday along Battle Forrest Drive near Decatur, Georgia, about 20 minutes east of Atlanta.

Neighbours told investigators they heard several gunshots between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. before the suspect fled the scene. One witness, Tiffany Williams, said she saw a disturbing scene moments after the attack.

DHS Pays Tribute As Official Condemns Attack

Reacting to the incident, U.S. official Markwayne Mullin confirmed the victim’s identity and condemned the attack, stressing that the Department has been working to prevent individuals with serious criminal records from gaining immigration benefits.

Meanwhile, DHS paid tribute to Bullis, describing her as a dedicated professional who served the Department with integrity and compassion. Officials said she had worked in several roles within the DHS Office of the Inspector General, including as an auditor in the Office of Audits and later as a team leader in the Office of Innovation.

Beyond her professional achievements, the Department said Bullis was known for her kindness and positive presence among colleagues. The news that DHS staff killed Georgia colleague has left the agency mourning.

Suspect Arrested With Criminal History

Authorities were eventually able to track the suspect’s silver Volkswagen Jetta using surveillance cameras. Officers from the Georgia Department of Public Safety later arrested him during a felony traffic stop.

Investigators say the motive behind the attacks remains unclear. However, officials revealed that Abel has a long criminal record that includes convictions for sexual battery, assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction, vandalism, and battery against a police officer.

Following his arrest, he was charged with multiple serious offences, including two counts of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

For context, court records also show that a man with the same name had previously been arrested in April last year after allegedly inappropriately touching four women. He was later sentenced to 120 days in jail and placed on probation for 36 months, with an order to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Community In Shock As Probe Continues

The tragic attacks have left both the DHS community and residents in the Atlanta area mourning the loss of lives while investigators continue working to uncover what led to the violent spree.

As a result, local residents say the coordinated nature of the attacks has deepened fears about safety. Authorities have not released information on potential ransom demands, as the incidents appear to be random acts of violence.
