The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season is heading for a nerve-shredding finale as Rangers International and Rivers United prepare for a winner-takes-all showdown on the final day of the campaign.
With just one point separating both clubs at the top of the table, the race for the NPFL title will be decided on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in what is already being described as one of the most dramatic endings to a Nigerian league season in recent years.
Rangers International currently sit top of the table with 65 points after 37 matches, while Rivers United remain close behind on 64 points. The Flying Antelopes now face a daunting trip to Lagos where they will take on Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Rivers United, on the other hand, will host Katsina United in Port Harcourt and hope Rangers stumble under pressure.
For Rangers, the stakes could hardly be bigger.
A victory in Lagos would hand the Enugu-based club a ninth Nigeria Premier Football League title, drawing them level with Enyimba as one of the most successful clubs in Nigerian top-flight history. It would also mark another major achievement for coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, whose disciplined and defensively solid side have spent most of the season setting the pace in the title race.
But standing between Rangers and history is an Ikorodu City side that has become one of the toughest teams to beat at home this season.
The Lagos club, nicknamed the Oga Boys, remain unbeaten at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena throughout the campaign and are also fighting for a possible CAF Confederation Cup ticket. Their impressive home form has turned Sunday’s clash into one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
Rangers will be looking to experienced striker, Godwin Obaje for inspiration in front of goal. The forward has been one of the standout performers of the season and currently leads the NPFL Golden Boot race with 14 goals.
The title race became even more intense after Matchday 37 results kept both contenders separated by only a single point. Rangers defeated Bendel Insurance 2-1 in Enugu, while Rivers United fought back dramatically to beat Wikki Tourists 3-2 away from home and keep their title hopes alive.
The Nigeria Premier Football League has already confirmed that all final-day fixtures will kick off simultaneously at 4:00 p.m. to preserve the integrity of the competition. Reports also indicate that the league body has prepared two trophies — one in Lagos and another in Port Harcourt — because no one can yet predict where the title celebrations will erupt.
While Rangers are chasing history, Rivers United are hoping for one final twist.
The Port Harcourt side, coached by former Super Eagles star, Finidi George, must first beat Katsina United at home and then pray Ikorodu City can stop Rangers in Lagos. Rivers United have turned the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium into a fortress this season and remain unbeaten there for several months.
Sunday’s showdown is expected to bring massive attention across the country as fans wait to see whether Rangers will complete a historic title-winning campaign or whether Rivers United can snatch the crown at the death.
