Another major shake-up has rocked the administration of U.S. President, Donald Trump after U.S. Border Patrol Chief, Michael Banks, abruptly resigned from office on Thursday amid growing instability within America’s immigration enforcement leadership.
An official spokesperson for the Agency confirmed Banks’ resignation but declined to disclose the reason behind his sudden exit, according to Reuters.
Banks also did not immediately respond to enquiries seeking comments on his resignation.
His departure marks the latest in a series of exits and internal reshuffles involving top immigration officials under the Trump administration.
Banks was appointed by Trump in January 2025 to head the Agency responsible for securing U.S. borders and was widely regarded as a close ally of former Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, who was dismissed by Trump in March 2026.
Before returning to federal service, Banks spent more than 20 years with the Border Patrol before leaving in 2023 to serve as “border czar” for the Republican-controlled state of Texas.
Reports say his resignation comes at a delicate time for the administration as Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown continues to attract public scrutiny across the United States.
Banks’ exit also follows the planned departure of Acting ICE Director, Todd Lyons, later this month, alongside the retirement of controversial Border Patrol official, Gregory Bovino, in March.
The White House recently expanded the authority of Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, giving him broader control over immigration enforcement operations nationwide.
The administration had earlier announced that former immigration official, David Venturella, who previously worked for private prison company, GEO Group, would replace Lyons at ICE.
Trump returned to the White House promising a tougher crackdown on illegal immigration, repeatedly blaming former President, Joe Biden, for the surge in migrant crossings recorded during the previous administration.
According to U.S. government data, about 86,000 migrants were arrested at the southern border between February 2025 and January 2026, compared to 956,000 arrests during the same period under Biden.
Following Banks’ resignation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Rodney Scott, praised the outgoing chief for his leadership.
“During his time as chief, the border was transformed from chaos to the most secure border ever recorded,” Scott said.
During Banks’ time in office, the Trump administration intensified immigration enforcement operations by deploying Border Patrol agents into major U.S. cities.
The operations sparked backlash from immigrant-rights groups and residents after agents were accused of using aggressive tactics during arrests linked to immigration violations.
Unlike Bovino, who became publicly associated with raids in Democratic-led cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis, Banks largely stayed away from public attention throughout the operations.
In a farewell message to Border Patrol agents, Banks vowed to remain loyal to the Agency.
“I will forever be the greatest defender of the Border Patrol,” he reportedly wrote.
