NIGERIA- Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor made the announcement after consultations with political allies and stakeholders, stating that his decision was guided by the need to support unity within the party and promote stability in Rivers politics.
According to Fubara, the withdrawal was a “difficult but necessary decision” taken after deep reflection and extensive consultations with family, friends, and associates. He emphasized that his focus remains on strengthening cohesion within the party structure and ensuring a smooth electoral process going forward.
Fubara also pledged to support whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, signalling a shift toward internal party consensus ahead of the primaries.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC governorship primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party,” he said.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments within the APC in Rivers State as the party prepares for its internal primaries and the broader 2027 general elections. The withdrawal is expected to influence the dynamics of the governorship contest, as other aspirants continue to position themselves for the party’s ticket.
