Lagos Rail Upgrade: Sanwo-Olu Unveils New Trains to Transform Daily Commute
Lagos is taking a major step toward fixing its transport headaches as brand-new trains arrive to boost the State’s rail system.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially taken delivery of new 24-coach train sets, a move aimed at strengthening operations along the busy Red Line corridor and easing the daily struggle of commuters.
The development was announced by his aide, Gboyega Akosile, who confirmed that the trains are ready for deployment across key routes, including Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, and Oyingbo – areas known for heavy passenger traffic.
This latest addition is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader rail modernisation plan under the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project, designed to reduce dependence on road transport and tackle the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
The Red Line, which runs from Agbado to Oyingbo, is one of the flagship rail projects expected to move thousands of passengers daily once fully operational at scale. With these new coaches, capacity is set to increase significantly, cutting waiting times and making journeys faster and more predictable.
Officials say the trains are modern, high-capacity coaches built to meet growing demand, and they will improve frequency and reliability on the line. For many Lagosians who spend hours navigating traffic, this could mark a noticeable shift in daily life.
The Government has repeatedly emphasised its commitment to delivering on transport promises, and this delivery signals progress in that direction. Beyond convenience, the rail expansion is also expected to support economic activity by improving access to business districts and reducing the cost of movement.
While full integration and scaling may take time, the arrival of the trains is being seen as a strong step toward a more efficient, rail-driven transport system in Nigeria’s busiest city.
