Mystery at Sea: American Woman Vanishes During Bahamas Boat Trip.
Authorities in the The Bahamas have launched a search for a missing American tourist who reportedly disappeared after falling from a small boat during a vacation with her husband.
According to investigators, the woman went overboard on Saturday evening at about 7:30 p.m. local time while the couple were travelling in a small eight-foot dinghy. Strong ocean currents are believed to have quickly carried her away.
Her husband told police they had left Hope Town heading toward Elbow Cay when the incident occurred. He said his wife fell out of the boat and was swept into the sea, reportedly taking the boat’s keys with her.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed in a statement that multiple agencies are involved in an ongoing search operation.
Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief, Troy Pritchard told CBS News that the woman “apparently bounced out of the boat,” after which the strong currents carried her away and her husband quickly lost sight of her.
Left alone on the vessel, the husband reportedly paddled the dinghy back toward shore, eventually reaching the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard in the early hours of Sunday morning where he alerted someone that his wife was missing.
Police say teams from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, U.S. authorities, and local volunteers have joined the search.
The missing woman has been identified as Lynette Hooker from Michigan.
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about boating safety in the Bahamas. In a 2025 advisory, the United States Department of State warned travellers that boating on the islands is not strictly regulated and that serious accidents, including fatalities, have occurred.
