LAGOS, Nigeria: The Lagos State Government has impounded 175 vehicles over the alleged misuse and abuse of dealer number plates, warning vehicle dealers and motorists against using the plates for purposes outside their approved functions.
The enforcement exercise was carried out by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with vehicle registration regulations and improve identification of vehicles operating on Lagos roads.
The state government stressed that dealer plates are not intended for routine private commuting or prolonged use on public roads.
According to the authorities, dealer plates are primarily meant for legitimate activities connected with the movement, inspection, testing and delivery of vehicles by authorised dealers. They should not be used as a substitute for permanent vehicle registration.
The government also warned against using dealer plates on vehicles that have already been sold while awaiting registration, describing such practices as an abuse of the system.
The 175 vehicles impounded during the enforcement operation will be subjected to further checks, while the authorities are expected to take appropriate action against vehicles and dealers found to have violated the regulations.
The Lagos State Government has urged motorists, vehicle dealers and other stakeholders to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and that dealer plates are used strictly in accordance with the law.
Officials said enforcement efforts would continue across the state as part of measures to promote road safety, accountability and proper vehicle identification.
