Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has issued an official statement debunking a viral fake story claiming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to change Nigeria’s name and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region. The statement was released on May 21, 2026, through the Presidential Villa, State House Abuja channels.
Onanuga stated that the Presidency wishes to inform Nigerians clearly that there is no truth to the claims circulating online. The fake report alleged that President Tinubu was pushing for constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria to the “United States of Nigeria” and to end the practice of Sharia Law in the North. According to Onanuga, these assertions are entirely false and designed to mislead the public.
The viral story, which cited anonymous sources, was described by the Presidency as a product of desperate political actors seeking to stir up tension and distract Nigerians from the government’s ongoing reforms. Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu remains focused on delivering on his campaign promises, including economic recovery, security, and national unity.
“The Presidency wishes to inform Nigerians and state clearly that there is no truth to the viral fake story claiming that President Bola Tinubu seeks to carry out constitutional amendments that will change Nigeria’s name to the United States of Nigeria and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region, among other claims,” Onanuga said.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the misinformation and to rely only on official channels for accurate updates on government policy and decisions. The statement also called on media outlets and social media users to verify information before sharing, warning that the spread of fake news can create unnecessary panic and division.
