A 30-year-old Nigerian man, Olukanyinsola Odebode, has been handed a 12-year extended sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault against two women in Wales.

Swansea, Wales | August 24, 2026

A 30-year-old Nigerian man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of rape and sexual assault offences involving two women.

Olukanyinsola Odebode was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after a jury found him guilty of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.

The offences were committed between June 2024 and September 2025, with the cases involving incidents in the areas covered by Gwent Police and Dyfed-Powys Police.

The court heard that Odebode first came to the attention of police following a sexual offence against a woman in the Gwent area.

He was arrested in connection with the investigation and subsequently released on bail.

While on bail, he went on to sexually assault another woman in the Dyfed-Powys Police area, the court heard.

The separate investigations were later brought together for prosecution, leading to a trial at Swansea Crown Court.

Following the evidence presented during the trial, a jury convicted Odebode of the offences.

Court hears of continued risk

The sentencing hearing focused not only on the seriousness of the offences but also on the potential risk Odebode could pose to other members of the public.

The court heard that a Probation Service assessment considered him to present a high risk of serious harm.

Concerns were also raised about his attitude towards the offences and his apparent lack of insight into his behaviour.

Prosecutor Mark Wyeth KC told the court about the impact of Odebode’s actions on the victims.

The court also heard evidence concerning the circumstances surrounding the offences and the effect they had on the women involved.

One of the victims described Odebode as “very predatory” during the proceedings.

The court was also told that some sexual activity had been recorded.

Offences committed while on bail

A significant aspect of the case was that the second offence occurred after Odebode had already been arrested and released on bail in connection with the earlier investigation.

The circumstances were considered by the court when determining the appropriate sentence and assessing the level of risk he posed.

The prosecution argued that the pattern of behaviour demonstrated a serious concern about Odebode’s attitude towards women and the possibility of further offending.

Odebode continued to deny the offences, despite the jury returning guilty verdicts.

Other reports made to police

During sentencing, the court was also told that seven other women had previously raised concerns about Odebode’s behaviour with police dating back to 2019.

The reports reportedly included allegations of rape, sexual assault, indecent exposure and stalking.

However, those reports did not lead to convictions.

They were therefore not treated as proven offences in determining Odebode’s guilt. His conviction and sentence relate to the specific offences considered and established during the criminal proceedings at Swansea Crown Court.

This distinction is important because allegations reported to police do not, by themselves, establish criminal liability.

Judge imposes extended sentence

Judge Huw Rees imposed an extended sentence of 12 years.

The sentence consists of nine years in custody followed by three years on extended licence.

The extended sentence reflects the court’s assessment of the risk Odebode presents and the need for continued supervision and public protection after his release from custody.

His eventual release will be subject to the applicable rules governing extended sentences and any requirements for consideration by the Parole Board.

Odebode will also be required to remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The court heard that he had no previous convictions before the offences for which he has now been convicted.

Serious consequences for victims

The sentencing hearing also considered the consequences of the offences for the two women.

Victims of rape and sexual assault can experience significant and long-lasting emotional and psychological consequences, and courts routinely consider victim impact statements when determining sentence.

In this case, the judge’s decision to impose an extended sentence reflected the seriousness of the offending and the assessment that Odebode continued to pose a risk of serious harm.

The 12-year sentence means that Odebode will spend a substantial period in custody before being subject to further supervision in the community.

Police response

The case involved investigations by both Gwent Police and Dyfed-Powys Police, reflecting the fact that the offences occurred in separate police areas.

The prosecution of the case demonstrates the coordination required when serious sexual offences involve more than one jurisdiction within Wales.

Following the conviction and sentencing, the case has attracted attention because of the circumstances surrounding the second offence and the fact that it occurred while Odebode was on bail.

What the court established

Odebode was convicted of:

  • One count of rape
  • Two counts of assault by penetration

He received:

  • 12-year extended sentence
  • Nine years in custody
  • Three years on extended licence
  • Lifetime registration as a sex offender

The court’s sentence followed a jury trial at Swansea Crown Court.

The seven other reports mentioned during sentencing were not convictions and should not be presented as established offences.

Wider significance

The case highlights the serious approach taken by UK courts towards rape and other sexual offences and the additional consequences that can arise where an offender is assessed as presenting a continuing risk to the public.

It also underlines the importance of distinguishing between criminal allegations, police reports and offences proven beyond reasonable doubt in court.
