P-Square: Beyond The Music, The Money, The Family and The Questions That remain Unanswered

How Peter, Paul and Jude Okoye went from building one of Africa’s biggest music empires to fighting over money, loyalty, ownership and family.

LAGOS, NIGERIA: For years, the story of P-Square was one of Nigeria’s greatest success stories.

Peter and Paul Okoye were not just twin brothers. They were a brand, a business empire and, for millions of Nigerians and Africans, the soundtrack to an era.

With their elder brother Jude Okoye playing a major managerial and production role, the Okoye family built P-Square into one of Africa’s most successful music acts.

But behind the music, the family relationship was becoming increasingly complicated.

Today, what was once a story about two brothers making music has evolved into a much bigger dispute involving money, business ownership, royalties, management, spouses, loyalty, legal proceedings, social media, old family wounds and, most recently, the intervention of controversial social media personality VeryDarkMan.

The latest developments have forced Nigerians to reconsider a question that has followed the Okoyes for years:

What actually happened inside P-Square?

And perhaps more importantly:

Is there one person to blame, or is this a case where almost everybody played a part?

THE BEGINNING: WHEN FAMILY AND BUSINESS BECAME THE SAME THING

P-Square’s success was built on an unusual structure.

Peter and Paul were the performers, songwriters and faces of the group, while their elder brother Jude became deeply involved in the business and management side.P Square 2

That arrangement worked while the brothers trusted one another.

The problem, however, was that the line between family relationship, artistic partnership and business ownership gradually became blurred.

Many of the arguments that later destroyed P-Square were not simply about music.

They were about who had authority.

Who owned what?

Who contributed what?

Who deserved what percentage?

Who controlled the money?

Who had the final say?

And who was genuinely working for the benefit of the group?

The answers to those questions were apparently never sufficiently documented or communicated among the brothers.P Square 1

That is where the seeds of the eventual crisis may have been planted.

THE WARNING SIGNS WERE ALREADY THERE

Long before the final breakup, there were public signs that the family was struggling.

One of the most controversial issues involved Peter’s wife, Lola Omotayo.

Jude was notably absent from Peter and Lola’s wedding, creating speculation about tension within the extended family.Peter Okoye & Family

Jude later publicly rejected the idea that Lola was responsible for the family problems, saying that she was part of the family and asking people to stop blaming her.

But the fact that the issue had become public at all showed that the problem was no longer strictly between Peter and Paul.

Their wives and other relatives were increasingly becoming part of the emotional landscape surrounding the group.

There were also tensions surrounding Jude’s own wedding, with Peter’s absence becoming another subject of public discussion.Peter Okoye & Family

These incidents may appear insignificant when viewed separately.

But looking backwards, they show that the relationship between the brothers had already developed serious cracks years before the final collapse of P-Square.

2016-2017: THE P-SQUARE DREAM COLLAPSED

The first major breakup came in 2016 and 2017.

The disagreements reportedly involved creative control, management, finances and the role of Jude.

Peter increasingly questioned the management structure and complained about what he perceived as unequal treatment.Peter Okoye & Family

There were also disagreements over music selection and the contribution of each twin to the group’s albums.

Peter felt that some of Paul’s creative contributions were receiving greater attention, while he believed his own work was being undervalued.

The argument eventually became much larger than music.

Peter wanted greater independence.

Paul defended the existing structure.

Jude, as their elder brother and manager, became caught directly in the middle.

Instead of being the person who could permanently resolve the dispute, Jude increasingly became one of the people at the centre of it.

P-Square eventually split.

The public saw the breakup.

But what happened behind the scenes remained largely unknown.

2021: THE FAMILY APPEARED TO HAVE HEALED

In November 2021, Nigerians received what appeared to be the ending everyone wanted.Peter Okoye & Family

Peter and Paul reconciled publicly.

They embraced.

The family appeared reunited.

Peter’s wife Lola and Jude were also seen together during the reconciliation period.

For a moment, P-Square appeared to have survived its darkest chapter.

But the peace did not last.

By 2024, the old wounds were open again.

And this time, the disagreement became much more serious because money and alleged financial misconduct entered the centre of the story.
