Shettima Commissions Major Projects in Ondo, Joins Fasoranti’s 100th Birthday Celebration

Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited Ondo State on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where he commissioned major infrastructure projects and joined national leaders in celebrating the 100th birthday of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti.

Shettima was received in Akure, the Ondo State capital, by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other top government officials. The visit formed part of activities marking the centenary celebration of Pa Fasoranti, one of Nigeria’s most respected political and cultural figures.

During the visit, the Vice President commissioned the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project in Akure. The project is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and enhance transportation flow within the state capital.

Governor Aiyedatiwa described the project as a major milestone in the state’s infrastructure development, noting that it was initiated under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and completed under his administration. He added that it represents the first flyover in Akure and a significant step in modernising the state’s road network.

Vice President Shettima praised the Ondo State Government for its commitment to infrastructure development, describing the project as aligned with the federal government’s broader economic and connectivity goals.

A major highlight of the visit was the celebration of Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s 100th birthday. The elder statesman, a prominent leader of Afenifere, received tributes from political leaders across the country for his decades of service to Nigeria.

In a message delivered by Vice President Shettima on behalf of President Tinubu, Fasoranti was described as a symbol of integrity, education, and national unity. The President commended his lifelong dedication to justice, democratic values, and civic leadership.

Governor Aiyedatiwa further honoured Fasoranti by naming the newly commissioned flyover after him, in recognition of his contributions to public service and his enduring influence in national discourse.

Speaking at the centenary celebration, Pa Fasoranti expressed gratitude for reaching 100 years, reflecting on his experience spanning colonial rule, independence, military governance, and democratic rule.

He attributed his longevity to discipline, faith, and commitment to service, while encouraging younger Nigerians to embrace leadership built on honesty, sacrifice, and national interest.

Security was tightened across Akure during the visit as dignitaries, political leaders, and cultural figures gathered for the dual events of commissioning and centenary celebration. The atmosphere remained orderly, with heavy presence of security operatives ensuring a smooth programme.

Vice President Shettima’s visit to Ondo State highlighted both the federal government’s infrastructure drive and the recognition of elder statesmen in Nigeria’s political history. The commissioning of the Akure flyover and the celebration of Pa Fasoranti’s 100th birthday underscored themes of development, legacy, and national unity.
