U.S. President, Donald Trump, has sparked fresh controversy after warning that a journalist could be jailed over a report revealing that a second American pilot from a downed fighter jet was missing in Iran.
Speaking at the White House on April 6, Trump said the media leak made an ongoing rescue mission far more dangerous, arguing that sensitive details about the operation should never have been made public.
“We’re going to go to the media company that released it and say, ‘National security — give it up or go to jail,’” Trump said, referring to the unnamed journalist behind the report.
According to officials, the U.S. military had tried to keep the situation quiet after a United States Air Force fighter jet was brought down and the first airman was successfully rescued. News that a second officer was still missing soon surfaced online and was later confirmed by major news organisations.
The White House has since launched an investigation to uncover the source of the leak.
Several outlets, including CNN, reported on the missing pilot and the dramatic rescue operation that followed. The second officer was eventually recovered early Sunday in a risky mission.
John Ratcliffe compared the effort to “searching for a single grain of sand in the middle of a desert,” highlighting the difficulty of locating the stranded airman in hostile territory.
Trump insisted the leak gave Iranian forces a major advantage.
“It became much harder because someone leaked the information,” he said. “Suddenly the whole country knew a pilot was somewhere on their land fighting for his life.”
The remarks mark another escalation in the long-running standoff between Trump and major news organisations. Throughout his presidency, Trump has repeatedly attacked the media, taken legal action against some outlets, and pushed measures to restrict press access to government institutions.
One recent dispute involved The New York Times, which challenged new reporting restrictions imposed by the United States Department of Defence. A judge eventually ruled in favour of journalists, ordering that certain press credentials be restored.
Despite the ruling, the Pentagon later announced plans to move journalists’ offices outside its main headquarters to a separate annex facility.
