Tinubu: Nigeria Has Moved From Reform to Prosperity as Nation Marks 66th Independence
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria is entering a new phase focused on economic growth, shared prosperity and improved living standards, while acknowledging the challenges still facing millions of Nigerians.

ABUJA, NIGERIA: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has told Nigerians that the country is moving from a difficult period of economic reforms into a new phase focused on prosperity and improved living standards.
The President made the declaration in his Independence Day address on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as Nigeria marked its 66th year of independence.
Speaking to Nigerians, Tinubu said the reforms implemented by his administration had laid the foundation for what he described as a more stable and prosperous economy.
According to the President, Nigeria’s economy recorded growth of more than four per cent in 2026, while inflation had declined from its previous peak. He also pointed to improvements in foreign exchange stability, rebuilding of foreign reserves and growth in non-oil exports.
Tinubu said Nigeria generated more than $6 billion in non-oil export revenue in 2025, describing the development as evidence of the country’s growing economic diversification.
However, the President acknowledged that economic indicators alone do not fully reflect the daily experiences of Nigerians.
He recognised that millions of citizens continue to face difficulties with the cost of food, school fees, healthcare, transportation and other necessities.
Tinubu said his administration was therefore continuing with social intervention programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians and expanding access to education, healthcare and financial opportunities.
He highlighted initiatives including the National Social Register, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, CREDICORP and programmes targeting primary healthcare and basic education.
On security, the President paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security personnel who continue to serve across the country.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices of families affected by insecurity, saying the government remained committed to protecting Nigerians and strengthening national security.
Tinubu argued that many of Nigeria’s current challenges had accumulated over several decades and could not be completely resolved within a single four-year administration.
He nevertheless maintained that his government could change the country’s direction by implementing reforms and building stronger economic foundations.
The President used the occasion to call for national unity, resilience and continued commitment to Nigeria’s future.
He said the country had passed through a difficult period but was now positioned to pursue broader prosperity.
As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Tinubu urged citizens to remain hopeful and committed to building a stronger nation.
He concluded his address by wishing Nigerians a happy Independence Day and praying for the continued progress of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. 🇳🇬
