The Federal Government has brought back 1,230 Nigerians who were stranded in the Republic of Niger, as authorities moved swiftly to rescue citizens caught in the country’s growing political and security crisis.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria), the evacuation was carried out in two phases. The first batch of 708 returnees arrived in Nigeria on March 23, 2026, while another 522 Nigerians were successfully airlifted on March 29.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, officials explained that the operation was coordinated with several local and international partners, particularly the International Organization for Migration, which provided key logistical and technical support.
Upon arrival at the airport in Kano, the evacuees were received by a joint team of government and humanitarian agencies, including the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Other bodies involved in the reception included the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and officials from the governments of Kano State and Katsina State. Their coordinated effort ensured the evacuees were processed quickly and safely.
After landing, the returnees were profiled and documented at the airport before being transported to the Immigration Training School, Kano, where temporary shelter was arranged.
While there, they received food, sanitary supplies and medical attention where necessary. After the completion of the required procedures, the evacuees were discharged and reunited with their families.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said the exercise reflects the Federal Government’s responsibility to protect Nigerians wherever they may be, adding that authorities are closely monitoring developments in Niger and maintaining diplomatic engagement to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.
The government also thanked the Republic of Niger for cooperating during the evacuation, describing the support as a sign of the strong relationship between both countries.
International partners, especially the International Organization for Migration and the International Committee of the Red Cross, were also praised for their contributions to the successful operation.
The ministry further advised Nigerians living abroad to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain regular contact with Nigerian embassies or consulates for quick assistance in emergencies.
